New Safety Management Fee

The introduction of this fee will directly benefit and impact the Highline student experience in a number of ways:

Increased Staffing

Funding will help fill a gap in evening shift staffing. This will help provide safety checks and patrols for our evening classes and our residents that live on campus full-time.

Parking Lot Maintenance

Provides funding for a consistent maintenance schedule for sweeping, cleaning, sealing, re-striping, crack filling and asphalt overlay. This ensures the condition of parking lots look kept up and that employees, students, visitors feel safe while on campus.

Camera System Upgrades

Access to cameras is important for Public Safety to monitor the campus and investigate crimes.

Lighting System Upgrades

Poorly lit or unlit walkways can make students feel unsafe while on campus. Upgrading our existing campus lighting system to improve visibility in the evening is a priority for the Public Safety Department.

Q&A:

The Safety Management fee is a comprehensive fee that includes a parking permit for students as well as funds for parking infrastructure, parking maintenance, security cameras, safety enhancements and officer salaries.

Yes, students who pay the tuition fee will pick up their permits from the Public Safety window (Bldg. 6, 1st floor). There will be no out of pocket expense at the time of pick up since it’s already been included in the fee.

For students that do not pay the Safety Management tuition fee, but still want a parking permit, you can purchase a quarterly pass at the Cashier office for $40.00. This seems like a sharp increase from the last school year however parking rates have not increased since 2008. The updated rates reflect the cost of upkeep, maintenance and safety upgrades that our department is responsible for.

The Safety Management fee will generate funds that go right back into campus enhancements that the State does not fund for community colleges. This includes parking maintenance and infrastructure projects, safety upgrades that include better lighting and security cameras, maintaining the emergency communication system, and officer staffing for the evening hours.

Additionally, the Public Safety Department has plans to support the incentive programs for those that use alternative transportation to commute to Highline College. More information on these future programs will be sent out at a later time.

Yes, the daily pass will still be available at the parking pay station machines in the East, South, and North lots. From 6am to 5pm a daily pass can be purchased for $3.00 and from 5pm to 10pm the pass is sold for $2.00.

Yes, depending on your financial aid package, this fee can be covered by Financial Aid. Please check with your financial aid advisor for more information.
