General Accounting
The mission of the General Accounting Department, is to maintain and ensure the accuracy and integrity of the Highline College General Ledger through account reconciliation and analysis, provide timely and reliable financial and accounting information to the finance team and college community, maintain a knowledgeable staff who understands various accounting processes from start to finish, deliver accurate and timely customer service, and utilize technology effectively in the operation of accounting functions. This responsibility requires that we be service oriented relative to the financial needs of all departments on campus while still assuring that all transactions adhere to college policies and procedures, generally accepted accounting principles, and rules established by authoritative governing bodies.
We are responsible for maintaining the General Ledger in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). Some of the functions we oversee are:
- Cash Management
- Bank Reconciliations
- Month-End Close
- Year-End Close
- Job Scheduling
- Preparation / approval of Journal Entries
- Capital Asset Inventory
- Coordination and oversight of various audits including the bi-annual audit conducted by the State of Washington Auditor’s Office
- Preparation of various monthly and annual reports to internal management, the Board of Trustees, and outside agencies (such as IPED’s)
- FMS Table Maintenance, except for Grants, Contracts & Capital Projects
- Risk Assessment-Annual Report.
